LONDON

Saturday meetings are less formal, I guess, than the ones on the previous days, but these I actually have to attend. I listen to Dr. Moreau and watch for Nate, who isn’t nearby. At least, not obviously so. I sit with Joey and Dexter and pretend I’m not craning my neck to see Nate arrive.

The actual meeting is less information and procedure reminders and more of a hip-hip-hooray for Chamberlain, with another appearance from Wanda. She talks to us from the stage of this absolutely perfect stone-bench amphitheater, trees arcing over the back and shading our seats. Wanda has us all leaning forward, practically reaching out to touch her. It’s so clear that everyone adores the woman. Dexter calls her Magic Wanda, and I like him even better for the nickname.

Dr. Moreau doesn’t spend long making her speeches, and the meeting closes with the announcement of lunch. People clap aggressively for this.

We get a perfect barbecued meal complete with salads and fruit and a huge array of cookies that look good enough to eat (but I want to avoid a sugar crash that might throw off my mood for whatever it is that Nate has planned). Joey and Dexter are in line behind me, and when he sees that I don’t pick up a cookie, he shrugs and offers to take it for me.

“All yours,” I tell him. He and Joey look giddy with the idea of excessive empty carbs.

Again at the lunch tables, Nate seats himself somewhere that’s not beside me, and for about half a second, I regret it. But then I spend time getting to know a couple of other teachers and staff, meet the security team, and get a short lecture on the benefits of eliminating the penny from an older guy that either teaches statistics or economics, I can’t remember.

But now the meeting’s over. I look around for Nate. We didn’t talk about where we would meet, but the whole staff was at the amphitheater and the barbecue, so I’m sure he’s around here somewhere.

A woman who looks young enough to be a student taps me on the arm. “London, right?” she says. Her hair is a glorious explosion of red curls kept slightly within control by a blue silk scarf at the back of her neck.

“Yeah, I’m London,” I say, smiling back at her.

“I’m supposed to give you this,” she says. Little bit of mystery clinging to her. She’s got a secretive smile that tells me something’s going through her mind. I like her face.

“What’s your name?” I ask, taking an envelope from her hands.

“Sage. Whitney. I work at the library.”

“With Desi?” I want her to know I know something about this place.

She nods and smiles. “Right. If you need anything, one of us is always there.”

“And if you need any yoga, I’m taking over the main floor of the Hall.”

Her smile convinces me she’s going to take me up on it. “I’d love to make it happen,” she says. “Have fun.”

She’s pointing to the envelope in my hand.
